Benjamin Franklin Heintzleman (1888-1965) was born in Pennsylvania, graduated from the Pennsylvania State School of Forestry with a bachelor's degree in 1907, then went on to earn a master's degree in Forestry at Yale University. He entered the U.S. Forest Service in 1910 or 1911 and worked in Oregon and Washington until 1918. He was then transferred to Ketchikan, Alaska.
